Building a Scalable Membership Platform for A Level AHEAD

The Challenge

Andy Hurley, a seasoned educator with over 30 years of experience, set out to create A Level AHEAD, a subscription-based learning platform designed to support A Level poetry students through expert-led video seminars.

The original idea was to sell bundles of three videos in clusters, but further research suggested a membership model would be more scalable and sustainable.

For the platform to succeed, a few things were essential. It had to offer secure, user-friendly access to paid video content, support multiple membership tiers for both individuals and institutions, stream high-quality video without friction (or unauthorised downloads), and be built to scale as new poets and resources were added; potentially reaching an international audience as content grows beyond the UK schools curriculum.

Setting Clear Goals

We needed to strike a balance: protect premium educational content while making it easy for users to access it. The buying process had to feel smooth, and the model had to accommodate different types of users, from solo learners to entire schools. And above all, the system had to be robust and flexible enough to grow with the business.

Shaping the Solution

After reviewing the options, it became clear that a membership model would offer stronger long-term benefits than the initial cluster based approach. Recurring income, easier content management, and a streamlined user experience all pointed in the same direction.

We built the platform on WordPress, using it as the CMS alongside a feature-rich membership plugin to manage subscriptions. This included support for institutional access, group memberships, and free trials to help encourage early engagement.

How We Approached the Build

Understanding the Market

We started by digging into the UK education sector, looking at how schools and students engage with digital resources and what pricing structures they’re familiar with. The analysis showed that while selling small bundles might bring in quick wins, it could quickly become hard to manage and scale. A membership model, in contrast, offered recurring revenue and a more consistent experience.

Content Creation with AI Support

To produce the video seminars efficiently and cost-effectively, Andy adopted Synthesia AI, an AI tool that generates videos with avatars and voiceovers. This meant he could produce professional grade content without the need for studio setups or editing teams. It also allowed for easy updates, regular content additions, and even translation into other languages, laying the groundwork for future international reach.

Designing for Usability

Once the business model was clear, we began shaping the user journey. Wireframes and prototypes were created in Figma, focusing on simplicity and clarity. The end result was a site where students could log in and find what they needed without hassle. On the development side, we integrated:

  • Tiered memberships
  • Secure video hosting to prevent unauthorised sharing
  • Clean, user-focused UI to manage access and updates

Keeping Content Safe and Performance Smooth

With premium educational videos at the heart of the offering, content protection was a priority. We put encrypted video hosting in place and ensured that only paying members could access the material relevant to their subscription level. We also optimised site performance to guarantee smooth playback, even on lower-spec devices.

What’s Been Achieved So Far

The platform is live and delivers structured, high-quality learning for A Level poetry students. While early uptake has been modest, the foundations are solid. As more content is added, particularly content aligned with the curriculum, we expect to see greater engagement.

The system also includes clear upgrade paths, encouraging users to move from individual to higher-tier memberships as their needs grow.

Reflections and Learnings

One thing this project reinforced is that great design and user experience only go so far; content quality and a clear marketing strategy are equally important. Thinking about scale from day one also saved a lot of potential future headaches. The tech side is now in place to support growth rather than limit it.

Looking Ahead

Andy is now focused on growing the content library, with new seminar videos released weekly. A newsletter keeps members informed about updates and new resources, while analytics help track user behaviour and identify what’s working.

There’s strong potential to expand into the wider English language learning space, which would open up further markets and audiences.

With a solid foundation, a growing catalogue, and a clear vision, A Level AHEAD is well placed to become a trusted learning hub for A Level poetry students.

If you're planning an MVP or early-stage product and want to make sure the foundations are right before you build, we're happy to talk it through.
